Eat Walnuts and Eggs to Prevent Depression

Stop Depression Naturally Through The Right Foods

Walnuts from Stress ExpressThe World Health Organization predicts that by 2020, depression will be second only to heart disease as a worldwide health issue. 38% of women who experience depression have low folic acid. Eggs “contain the highest-quality food protein known to mankind….egg protein is often the standard by which all other proteins are judged,” says dietitian Carolyn Snyder of the Cleveland Clinic.

Harvard Science Review published a study by McClean Behavioral Genetics Laboratory citing that walnuts are powerful antidepressants. (Molasses and beets also work.)  So increase your intake of both eggs and walnuts to boost your mood and improve your stress. (Always consult your doctor first.)

Two Things That Shorten Your Life

Stop Sitting So Much & Cut Down on TV

According to an article in US Today, if you spent less than 3 hours a day sitting, it would add 2 years to your life.  And if you reduced your TV watching to less than to 2 hours a day, you could add another 1.4 years to your life.  Sitting is linked to diabetes, heart disease and stroke.  About half of the US reports sitting for 6 or more hours a day and 65% spend more than 2 hours a day watching TV.

New research presented at the American Institute for Cancer Research Conference reported that sedentary behavior is linked to breast and colon cancer.  Being sedentary (sitting) for long periods of time without moving increases inflammation (a leading cause of disease.)

The solution: set a timer for every hour.  Get up, move, walk around, look at nature, drink 8 ounces of clean water and connect with another human being. It could make a huge difference to your health.

Yoga Keeps You Young

photo of yoga posture from the book Stress Express!Just 12 minutes of daily yoga for two months improved cognition among people with memory disorders in a  study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. Other stress relievers include aerobic exercise, listening to mellow music, meditating or praying, and writing in a journal.

Recent studies at the University of NC Hospitals and Duke University show yoga reduces stress and also provide significant improvements for those with illnesses such as arthritis, back pain, cancer, diabetes, epilepsy, etc.  It has even been shown to help breast cancer and menopausal patients find relief from symptoms.

Yoga:

• increases flexibility through stretching
• improves posture
• massages all internal organs of body
• increases lubrication of tendons, joints, ligaments
• flushes toxins out of the body
• tones muscles
• provides a deep sense of relaxation

Try yoga in a local class or video today.  You won’t believe how much better you feel.

Are You Tired Because You’re Thirsty?

Glass of water from Stress ExpressWater is essential to our survival.  Every cell and system in your body depends on water.  A 5% drop in body fluids will cause a 25% loss in energy; a 15% drop leads to death. So drinking those 8 glasses a day is vital.  Equally important is the restorative power of being around water.  Waterfalls and oceans are fantastic stress relievers because they have negative ions, which refresh and revitalize you. Soaking in warm water for 20 minutes relaxes you significantly, as does soaking feet and legs (up to the knee) for 30 minutes.  Try it next time you are stressed; water is very healing! More Vacation Days = Better Productivity

More Time Off  Means Better, Happier, Healthier Workers

Did you know that if women aged 45-64 took two weeks of vacation a year, they would cut the incidence of heart attacks in half!  That’s right, the simple act of going on vacation can save your life. (Boston College study)

Exhausted woman from Stress Express!According to Expedia, 34% of employed Americans  return from vacation feeling better about their jobs and are even more productive.  53% say they come back feeling rested and rejuvenated.

At Red Frog, the CEO gives his employees unlimited time off.  That’s right- unlimited time off.  And it’s never abused or taken for granted.  Because more time off means greater productivity.  You have time to recharge and renew; creativity abounds and you return to work with a good attitude, ready to take on challenges.

In 2011, 70% did not take all their allotted vacation time.  Managers: take note- this is not a good idea. Encourage your people to take all their time off, and consider giving them more.  You may just find you have even greater success and better results.

Do You Know the Poisons in Your Milk?

I am passionate about staying healthy and I know many of you are, too.  I’ve been growing organic vegetables on my patio for years, because of all the pesticides used on commercial vegetables. But even I was shocked to see how far Monsanto would go in the name of genetic modification.  You have to watch the video to see all the information.  It’s scary and disgusting. And it has huge implications for the health of anyone drinking milk, eating US cheese. etc.

Check it out for yourself. http://ow.ly/92Qdx

The Abundance Mindset

Are You Living with a Poverty Consciousness?

Glass of water from Stress ExpressHave you ever been around a large family that did not have much money but was filled with joy and love? They feel blessed, and  have a wonderful attitude of gratitude that people with far less money have.  It’s not that they don’t have financial worries like everyone else, it’s where they choose to put their focus. It’s called an Abundance Mindset.

This mindset starts out with gratitude for all the blessings in your life, all the good things.  It focuses on love and joy, and the wealth of the gifts in your life, rather than lack.  In contrast is a poverty consciousness, where no matter how much you have materially, you feel poor or afraid that you will lose it all.  Often those people expect the worst and they get it, because that’s where they put their attention.

What about you?  Where do you put your attention?  Are you aware and thankful for all the many gifts and talents you have, the wonderful people in your life, the shelter, clothing and food you have?  How about the work you do that you get paid for when so many others are out of work?  How can you change the way you look at your life to recognize the wealth that is already present and attract in even more?  It’s all in your mindset.  Choose abundance and gratitude, make that your daily intention and see what manifests in your life.

The Single Most Important Health Action You Can Take

Just 15 Minutes a Day Can Save Your Life

According to the former US Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, 60% of all Americans do not get sufficient exercise to strengthen their own immune system.  Exercise helps release “feel-good” hormones like serotonin, beta-endorphin, and dopamine into your system.  According to Tufts Health & Nutrition Letter, even a “sometimes workout” can reduce the risk of heart failure by 18%.  And according to many other wellness sources, 15 minutes a day of some kind of exercise is a huge stress reliever and path to wellness.

So what does that look like? It could be 15 minutes of walking with a few quick sprints thrown in, 15 minutes of dancing, 15 minutes of yoga or tennis playing, 15 minutes of basketball.   The key to exercise is to make it fun and having an exercise buddy will help. Even modest exercise like standing an extra 30 minutes a day can add three years to your life!

So find something that works for you and do it regularly. You;ll live longer, be healthier and have much less stress!

Your Money or Your Life

You Can’t Enjoy One without the Other

Lots of people have been hurt by the recession, and many people are scrambling to get more money, pay off debt and be financially secure.   I know what that fear and anxiety can be like, because I lived through it. Not long ago, my husband was underemployed and because of the recession, business was down.  We scrambled, took seminars, read books, cut expenses, etc.  I learned a number of things that helped us diversify our income streams and pay off debt. I’m deeply grateful that my husband now has a terrific job and business is good.

But I also learned one of the most important lessons from the death of both of my parents; one over 30 years ago and one a few weeks ago.  Money without health means very little.  There are plenty of wealthy, lonely, critically ill people who would give up every dollar to be fit, healthy, loved and vibrantly alive.

My mother suffered over 15 years before she died. What made her regain her will to live each time was seeing her two children and their love. A lifelong smoker, my dad had been ill for a few years. His lack of good health kept him homebound, when he had planned to travel. Sadly, he died just before Christmas. Their examples taught me to cherish my health, to be proactive and physically active, to take lots of vitamins and eat right.

Your health is critically important to your enjoying your life.  So while you’re making money, take excellent care of your body. It’s easy to let take over your life. But what good is money if you can’t enjoy it?  Your family values you – the human being, not the moneymaker. The key is balance: stay fit and healthy so that you can enjoy the benefits of your hard work and be with loved ones.

Stress Relief Through Food- Eat Local

Stress Tip:  What You Eat Matters – Eat Local, Fresh, Whole

Fire Up your health and reduce stress with fruit and vegetablesWelcoa leader David Hunnicutt says one of the keys to better health is to eat local, as much as possible.  That means fresh food from your own garden, local farmers’ markets and your grocery store.  The more you dine out, the less control you have over pesticides, etc.  Eat whole foods, not processed foods, as they have very little nutritional value.  Up your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables to 5-8 servings daily.

We’ve all heard this, but here’s why it’s true: they are chock full of antioxidants, vitamins and fiber.  Vitamin C has been shown to lower blood pressure and help cortisol levels return to normal.  Mix it up – try to eat several different colored fruit and veggies a day! Blackberries have more than double the amounts of vitamin C, calcium and magnesium than blueberries.  Both boost your memory and are great for you!  Choose organic ones to prevent pesticide ingestion.

Note: My husband and I started an organic container garden years ago. We grow fresh lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and more.  There is nothing like the flavor of fresh picked vegetables!  And if you’re too busy, try picking up local produce at a farm stand, farmer’s market or farm co-op.  The fresher and the more local the food, the better and healthier for you.
